Pedro Gutierres
Porto Alegre, 1987
Pedro Gutierres (Porto Alegre - Brazil, 1987) is a contemporary artist based in São Paulo, with over 20 years of practice in visual and sound arts.
Gutierres' work navigates the boundaries between drawing and painting, addressing issues of conflict and contrast between nature and urban life. Despite its handmade quality, laden with issues inherent to the realm of painting, his compositions and textures are informed by fields such as photography, video, and digital image manipulation.
In addition to being a visual artist, Gutierres is a multi-instrumentalist and maintains a career within the realm of music, particularly experimental and instrumental. The interchange between audio and visual allows him to establish connections between different languages and media.
Pedro Gutierres has held solo exhibitions in Brazil and Germany and his work is part of the historical collection of MAC-RS (Museum of Contemporary Art of Rio Grande do Sul), among other collections.

The positioning of Pedro Gutierres's recent work is, above all, geographical. Produced in the Serra da Cantareira, on the border between the outskirts of the North Zone of São Paulo and the forest, the paintings point to the artist's daily routes, to his address.
At first glance, the current exhibition can be perceived as a vision of literally dehumanized collapse. Where have the people gone? Painting canvases, like monitoring screens, sparkle with human traces and a predatory wildlife. The suggestion of a sinister narrative is completed with religious iconography: representations of images of saints, among other sacred elements, sometimes as abandoned as a carcass-vehicle in the middle of the forest.
As in the classical field of still life representation, Pedro Gutierres's deadly and post-digital nature, in its coldness, makes room for vibrant questions of painting itself. A pleasurable experimental investigation of colors, textures, transparencies, and volumes is underway. The blown artificial light, for example, is obtained by the absence of matter, in methodically unpainted areas. Possibilities inherent in collage are explored in painting, through precisely delimited layers of paint. As in the representative plane, a lot happens at these mass boundaries.
The artist's living hand is present in the brushstrokes, depositing or scraping acrylic paint in dynamics that transform with each work. Perhaps a human filter for digitized images, plotted on vinyl stickers, mirrored by front cameras, captured in surveillance videos, and organized by pattern-recognizing algorithms. What was artificialized, chewed.
In the ambiguous MATA, ambiguity and tension remain, like barbed wire delimiting properties. Gutierres is interested in the borders that communicate/threaten, but he draws attention to how they can be easily crossed. There's a possible approach to his work: step back and observe, approach and overcome.
